Photovoltaic and Energy Applications

Using Energy Efficiently with EMD Performance Materials
Climate changes and high energy-prices open new growth markets for renewable energy sources. Photovoltaics play a key role here, making it possible to use solar energy efficiently. The most important technologies include crystalline silicon cells, thin-film solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells and organic photovoltaic cells. Based on the characteristics of each technology, different applications enable the harvesting of solar energy under various different light conditions targeting the best possible conversion rates at lowest manufacturing cost. EMD Performance Materials supports this development and provides innovative, user-friendly materials and formulae for today's and the next-generation solar cells.

Materials for Photovoltaics

New photovoltaic materials and formulae from EMD Performance Materials are supplemented by process chemicals for printing technologies and for chemical coating processes which are used to manufacture solar cells. EMD Performance Materials product range includes organic semiconductors for flexible, robust and printed organic solar cells from the lisicon® range as well as livion® electrolytes and Solarpur® electrolyte components for dye-sensitized solar cells, which demonstrate superior quality and performance.

Applications in Architecture

Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV)

As well as the panel lifetime, the transparency, color and flexibility all play an important role for building related applications, i.e. facades and solar-activated windows. EMD Performance Materials is working on innovative materials to support these new technologies and thus contributes to the development of renewable energies. For example, EMD Performance Materials is supporting pilot projects for Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) and Organic solar cells (OPV) using its own electrolytes, electrolyte components and printable polymers.
