High-Performance PV Materials from EMD Performance Materials

Solar cells will become a dominant energy source of the future. Important photovoltaic (PV) technologies are organic photovoltaic cells (OPV), dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC), crystalline silicon cells (c-Si) and perovskite solar cells (PSC). 
All these solar cell types compete with respect to their ability to improve energy efficiency and continuously lower production costs. EMD Performance Materials is promoting this development by supplying innovative, easy-to-use materials and formulations for next-generation solar cells - products which enable our customers to improve cell performance and to save costs in cell manufacturing. EMD Performance Materialsfocuses on novel materials, formulations and process chemicals for both printing and chemical coating technologies used in solar cell manufacture.

Research and development
Furthermore, Merck is constantly developing new materials for next-generation solar cells. In addition to our activities in crystalline solar cells, our development program focuses on advanced organic materials for novel cell concepts and barrier materials based on perhydropolysilazane for flexible solar cells.

A new generation of solar cells based on sensitized dyes will encourage entirely new designs such as colored, almost transparent and integrated solar cell applications. EMD Performance Materials is rapidly facilitating this trend through its customer-oriented livion® electrolyte systems. In addition, highly pure Solarpur®-grade individual components for use in electrolyte systems are being brought to market.

Organic semiconductors are important materials for the development of cost-efficient and flexible solar cells. EMD Performance Materials´ portfolio of proprietary charge transport materials is especially designed to improve bulk hetero-junction solar cells applications and other novel organic photovoltaic cells concepts. These products are sold under the lisicon® brand.
