Our Challenge

In a fast paced industry such as ours, customers demand highly innovative solutions which will keep their products at the forefront of technology. EMD Performance Materials must continually develop new materials to allow us to expand into new technologies and application fields with high future growth potential.
 

Our Solution

We are constantly exploring next generation technologies, and as part of this effort, we identified spin-on silicon based products as an area offering significant potential. Using our experience and knowledge of polysilazanes from the IC Materials side of our business, we developed new technology, described below, for use in our Optronics business.
 

Our Approach

Our R&D team, developed a new synthesis process for siloxane polymers. Working in close collaboration with a joint development partner, they then accelerated the process and produced a series of novel polymers. At the same time we worked alongside key customers to formulate the finished products. The result is a completely new siloxane-based spin-on glass technology with a wide range of applications which are central to the development of growth markets like semiconductors, displays, LEDs and solar cells.

The new materials allow customers to coat surfaces with a silicon liquid which converts into a solid glass layer. Compared to conventional sol-gel type materials, our newly developed technology improves production processes by allowing improved thermal budgets while also providing electrical insulation and barriers to gas and humidity. It also has a number of end product benefits such as transparency and non-discolouration of the material, for example in display or lighting, and has excellent hardness and anti-scratch properties enabling protective layers on devices such as touch screens.
