In PVA technology, the electrodes for the electric field are slightly tilted, which results in inclined electric fields in the fringe areas. These give the liquid crystals a preferred direction for their switching behavior, resulting in faster switching times.

PVA Technology for LC Displays

Defined switching of the liquid crystal molecules in the VA display is also possible without protrusions which prescribe a uniform starting direction for the molecules as in an MVA display. To achieve this, in a PVA (patterned vertical alignment) display, the electrode areas are staggered so that the resulting electrical field close to the electrode fringes is not orthogonal but slightly diagonal to the substrate surface. This tilted electric field gives the LC molecules a starting direction for the switching process, which in turn results in a faster switching time.
